Kids throughout Northern Monmouth County Celebrate a Chanukah Wonderland

For the past 25 years, Chabad of House of Rutgers University and its affiliate Chabad Houses of Central and Southern NJ has been holding a Chanukah Wonderland for local children and their families. On Tuesday, a few hundred Holmdel children and ‘children at heart’ spent the afternoon learning about the miracles of Chanukah, eating traditional foods and trying their hands at arts and crafts.

“This was our first Chanukah Wonderland Celebration in Holmdel, and everyone wanted to know why it only lasted for such a short period of time” said Rabbi Ephi Carlebach. “It’s important for the kids to have fun, learn the meaning of Chanukah, and also hear the traditional story of Chanukah.”

In addition to an Olive Press Workshop detailing the miracle and meaning of Chanukah, families also got to spend time with friends and family. The holiday commemorates the “miracle of the container of oil” where there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day after the victory of the Macabees. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate fresh olive oil.

“We focus on how light is the most powerful way to fight darkness,” said Carlebach. “Anyone can bring light into the lives of others.”
