Sir Isaac's Faith
by Dr. Arnie Gotfryd

"In a universe of such orderliness and harmony, obviously man too must be subject to order and purpose" - The Rebbe - Mind Over Matter, p.24

Readers Write

newtonHi, Aryeh -  In "Jacob's Sheep Revisited," you said, "Sir Isaac Newton spent more time studying bible codes than exploring physics in his quest to understand how the world really works." Where can this historic info be found? What "Bible Codes" did Newton study? Do you think he was a "Noachide"?

Thanks,
Terry L.

Hi Terry,

You probably were fed the same revisionist image of Newton that I was: Father of a mechanistic worldview; a deist (as in G-d wound up the universe and took a nap); associated with the idea of  "Show me all the particles and all the forces acting on them and I'll tell you everything that will ever happen until the end of time".

newton.writingI too was surprised by the documented facts. For example, is this picture worth a 1000 words?

If so, let's start calculating 1,000 pictures worth because according to legendary British economist John Maynard Keynes who reported on Newton's religiosity for the Royal Society, Newton penned not a thousand words but over 1,000,000 words on understanding the Bible. Newton denied the 'trinity'  but believed in G-d and in the divinity of the Hebrew Bible. Does that make him a Noachide? It's a good start.

Here's a
link to a fascinating article that appeared widely last year on these priceless documents  becoming available to the public for the first time.

The curator of the exhibit says that "the papers show Newton's conviction that important knowledge was hiding in ancient texts. He believed there was wisdom in the world that got lost. He thought it was coded, and that by studying things like the dimensions of the temple, he could decode it."

And for those of you who think that the coming of Moshiach is a wishful fantasy, and that no rational person could possibly believe such drivel, remember it was none other than Sir Isaac Newton whose research into the Bible and history led him to conclude that the end of days will see "the ruin of the wicked nations, the end of weeping and of all troubles, the return of the Jews captivity and their setting up a flourishing and everlasting Kingdom," he posited.

May it take place speedily in our days, Amen!

Best regards,
Aryeh.
